  2. EUDORA LIGHT FOR MACINTOSH 3.1.3

  5. This is version 3.1.3 of Eudora Light for Macintosh. This README provides
  6. information on the following topics:

  15. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  16. ======================

  18. To use Eudora Light for Macintosh, you must have the following:
  19.  
  20. *  A Macintosh Plus or later model.
  21. *  Macintosh System 7.0 or later.
  22. *  A mail account with an Internet service provider or an Internet-style
  23.         network account.
  24. *  Access to your mail account via a modem or Internet-style network
  25.     connection.
  26.  
  27. ============================
  28. DRAG AND DROP REQUIREMENTS
  29. ============================
  30.  
  31. If you do not have MacintoshÆ Drag and Drop running on your Macintosh,
  32. certain features may be disabled. Macintosh Drag and Drop is included in
  33. System 7.5 and System 7 Pro, but is not in earlier versions of System 7.
  34.  
  35. Macintosh Drag and Drop requires that Finder 7.1.3 or newer is running for
  36. the Drag and Drop extensions to work properly. Installing the Drag and Drop
  37. extensions with an older Finder has been shown to cause strange behavior,
  38. and is not recommended.
  39.  
  40. If you are running a system version with a Finder that is older than 7.1.3,
  41. you will be able to drag and drop within the Eudora application. However,
  42. you will not be able to drag between Eudora and other running applications.

  46. INSTALLATION
  47. ==============
  48.  
  49. You can install this version of Eudora Light over an earlier version of
  50. Eudora Light. Just follow the instructions below, and when you open the new
  51. version of Eudora, your Settings, mailboxes, etc. will be updated for the
  52. new version.
  53.  
  54. To install Eudora Light, do the following:
  55.  
  56. 1.   Copy the Eudora Light software onto your hard disk.
  57.       The latest version of Eudora Light for the Macintosh
  58.       can be found at ftp.eudora.com or www.eudora.com. (If
  59.       you are installing from diskettes, skip to the next step.)
  60. 2.   Restart your Macintosh while holding down the shift key.
  61.       This turns off your Macintosh extensions. (You must hold
  62.       down the shift key until you see the message
  63.       "Extensions off.")
  64. 3.   If you are installing from diskettes, insert Eudora Light
  65.       diskette 1 of 2 into your Macintosh diskette drive.
  66. 4.   Double-click on the Eudora Light Installer icon to start the
  67.       installation program. The Eudora Light splash screen is
  68.       displayed. Click Continue to display the Eudora README window.
  69.       Note:    The contents of the README window can be printed or
  70.       saved to a file for later review.
  71. 5.   Once you have reviewed the contents of the README window,
  72.       click Accept. The Eudora Install dialog is displayed, allowing
  73.       you to select which items you want to install. To see a
  74.       description of an item, click on the item (the description is
  75.       displayed just below the selection area).
  76. 6.   To install all of the items, be sure the default item
  77.       Eudora Light is selected and click Install.
  78.  
  79.       To install just the items you want, select them by clicking
  80.       on each one (hold down the command key to select multiple
  81.       items, and be sure that the Eudora Light item is not selected),
  82.       then click Install.
  83.  
  84.       If you selected the Eudora Light installation item, the Restart
  85.       dialog is displayed, informing you that your Macintosh will
  86.       need to be restarted at the end of the installation. Click Yes.
  87.  
  88.       The Eudora Version Selection dialog is displayed, allowing you
  89.       to select which version you want to install.
  90.  
  91.       680x0
  92.       This is the smallest version. It runs on any Macintosh,
  93.       including Power Macs, but on Power Macintoshes it is
  94.       not as fast as the PowerPC or Universal versions.
  95.  
  96.       PowerPC
  97.       This version runs only on Power Macintoshes. It does not
  98.       run on standard 680x0 machines.
  99.  
  100.       Universal (or Fat)
  101.       This version requires the most disk space. It runs on any
  102.       Macintosh, and on a Power Macintosh runs as fast as the
  103.       PowerPC version.
  104.  
  105. 7.   Select the version you want. A dialog is displayed asking you
  106.       where you want to install the Eudora Light 3.1.3 Folder.
  107. 8.   Select the destination folder and click Install. The install
  108.       program begins installing the items you selected onto the
  109.       appropriate locations on your disk.
  110. 9.   If you are installing Eudora from diskettes, insert the
  111.       appropriate installation diskette when you are prompted.
  112. 10.  Once the installation is complete, you are prompted to
  113.        restart your Macintosh.
  114.        Click Restart.
  115.  
  116. This completes the installation of the Eudora Light software. To find out
  117. how to set up Eudora so that you can send and receive e-mail, see the
  118. "Configuration" section in the README installed with the software, and also
  119. see the User Manual section "Opening and Configuring Eudora." For details
  120. about the files in the Eudora Folder (in your System Folder) and the Eudora
  121. Light Application Folder, see their corresponding sections in the Reference
  122. chapter of the User Manual.

  125. NEW FEATURES AND CHANGES IN 3.1.3
  126. ===================================

  128. Auto-configuration 
  129. ________________
  130.  
  131. Auto-configuration support has been added to Eudora 
  132. by using the Internet standard Application Configuration 
  133. Access Protocol (ACAP). ACAP is a client/server protocol
  134. which allows Eudora to retrieve configuration settings
  135. from a central server. These settings include those
  136. that must be set up for you to start sending and
  137. receiving e-mail, such as your POP account name and
  138. SMTP host. 
  139.  
  140. In order for you to use the auto-configuration settings, your 
  141. system administrator or service provider must set up a central
  142. server with your personal settings. You can then download
  143. those settings whenever you like. Typically, you would do
  144. so only when you first start using Eudora. However, you 
  145. can restore your settings to their original values at any time 
  146. by downloading them down again.
  147.  
  148. To download your settings, open the Settings dialog under
  149. the Special menu and click on the Auto. Configure icon. Fill
  150. in the ACAP Server Name and the ACAP Server Username fields; 
  151. your system administrator or service provider should have told
  152. you what to enter in these fields. Click the Fetch
  153. Settings Now button and the Auto Configuration password dialog
  154. box appears.  Type in your password in the password field
  155. and press the Configure Automatically button to download your
  156. settings from the ACAP server.
  157.  
  158. The following ACAP-related information primarily for use by 
  159. system administrators and/or service providers.
  160.  
  161. If the "If no account configured, try fetching settings from an 
  162. ACAP server" setting (#217) is on ("y"), then when Eudora is first 
  163. launched (actually any time Eudora is launched without a POP 
  164. account having been specified), the Auto-Configure panel of the 
  165. Settings dialog is displayed. In the absence of that switch, the 
  166. Settings dialog's Getting Started panel would appear instead.
  167.  
  168. The setting for the ACAP Server is #218, and the setting for the 
  169. ACAP Server Username is #219.
  170.  
  171. The port ID used in communicating with the ACAP server is 
  172. setting  #10109. 
  173.  
  174. You can obtain detailed information on setting up an ACAP server 
  175. to support Eudora clients on the Eudora web site. go to 
  176. http://www.eudora.com/techsupport, click Frequently Asked 
  177. Questions (FAQ), then click Automatic Initial Configuration with ACAP.

  179. Note: The upcoming version 2.0 release of the Eudora WorldMail Server 
  180. will support auto-configuration of Eudora clients.

  183. Pre-configuring the POP server
  184. __________________________

  186. System administrators can now pre-configure Eudora by putting 
  187. the Mail Host (POP) server name in the Settings dialog, so that 
  188. the user needs only to add his or her account name. When Eudora 
  189. is launched, it displays the Getting Started window of the Settings 
  190. dialog, the Mail Host (e.g., domainname) displaying the correct 
  191. Mail Host setup in your Settings panels.

  193. For example, suppose the Mail Host you required was assigned 
  194. xyz.qualcomm.com. When you start Eudora, Getting  Started automatically 
  195. displays xyz.qualcomm.com in the Mail Host field.  You just need to 
  196. insert your username in the Username text field.
